Top 100 Most Cited Articles on Radiofrequency Ablation and Liver Metastases: A Bibliometric Analysis

Descrição sucinta do(s) objetivo(s)

The present bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited articles on radiofrequency ablation and liver metastasis, aims to present the main metrics and publication characteristics, identify key contributors, areas of application, and the existing research gaps to guide future studies and innovations.

Material(is) e método(s)

The study was conducted in the Web Of Science database, using relevant and appropriate English keywords ("Radiofrequency Ablation" OR "RFA" OR "radiofrequency thermal ablation") AND ("Liver metastasis" OR "hepatic metastases"). Articles were categorized by citation count, title, authorship, publication year, country, institution, and journal. Data visualization and analysis were performed with VOSviewer and the Bibliometrix package in RStudio.

Resultados e discussão

These articles were published between 1998 and 2021, specially between 2004 and 2010. The countries with the highest number of publications are the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan, in descending order. This result reflects greater investment in research and education in these nations. Goldberg SN is the leading author. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is the institution with the highest number of papers. Radiology is the top-ranking journal in the field, and has the fastest-growing number of publications. The key words were “hepatic metastases”, “resection” and “radiofrequency ablation”. The technique is considered a minimally invasive alternative to surgery, preserving healthy tissue. The tumor’s size and proximity to large blood vessels can limit its use and results.

Conclusões

We believe that highlighting the 100 most cited articles on radiofrequency ablation for liver metastases will help clinical practice by guiding decisions, improving guidelines and protocols, and encouraging future studies. The number of citations is a key indicator of the impact and quality of the work and is generally proportional to the relevance of the findings to the scientific community.
