Interventional Radiology and Brazilian Medical Students: A Survey of Knowledge and Interests in a Public University – A New Scenario in 2025

Descrição sucinta do(s) objetivo(s)

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge and interest in interventional radiology among Brazilian medical students at a public university in 2025. The study also aims to assess the extent to which students have been exposed to interventional radiology during their education, identify knowledge gaps in current medical education concerning IR, investigate the demand for including IR topics in the academic curriculum and provide insights to support the expansion of IR education and awareness.

Material(is) e método(s)

A questionnaire was distributed to medical students from the first to sixth years at a public university. The survey included questions assessing familiarity with key IR terminology and procedures, perceptions of the scope of IR, and knowledge of imaging modalities used in the specialty. Students were also asked about their interest in learning more about IR.

Resultados e discussão

The questions are still being answered up to the present moment. Due to the university's vacation period, we have not yet obtained the number of responses we aimed for. However, so far, we have received a total of 137 complete responses. While 64.9% of students understood that IR plays both diagnostic and therapeutic roles, 32.1% were uncertain about the specific imaging modalities utilized in IR procedures. About half of the respondents correctly identified the procedures performed by interventional radiologists. Despite limited knowledge, 96.4% of the students expressed strong support for incorporating more IR content into the medical curriculum, highlighting the demand for greater educational opportunities in this rapidly evolving specialty.

Conclusões

Medical students at a public university in Brazil demonstrate limited knowledge but high interest in interventional radiology. The overwhelming majority advocate for the integration of IR education into the medical curriculum. In 2025, as IR continues to grow, expanding the presence of IR in medical training could help attract more future professionals to the field, enhancing its role in healthcare.
