Título

Musculoskeletal Urgencies: A Primer for Radiologists

Introdução e objetivo(s)

Musculoskeletal (MSK) urgencies include fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries that require prompt diagnosis to prevent complications. Radiology is essential for early detection, guiding clinical decisions, and improving outcomes. Plain radiography is the first-line imaging tool, while CT and MRI provide detailed evaluation in complex cases. This study highlights the role of radiology in MSK emergencies, discusses imaging modalities, and emphasizes accurate interpretation to enhance patient care and ensure timely interventions.

Método(s)

This study is a case-based review of major musculoskeletal (MSK) urgencies, illustrating key conditions through imaging examples using MRI, CT, and X-ray. By presenting real clinical cases, we aim to highlight the role of different imaging modalities in diagnosis and management. Each case will demonstrate characteristic findings, emphasizing the specific contributions and diagnostic value of each technique in accurately identifying and assessing MSK emergencies.

Discussão

Musculoskeletal emergencies can be broadly categorized into traumatic and non-traumatic conditions, each requiring distinct radiological approaches. Traumatic MSK emergencies include fractures, sports-related injuries, and hemorrhages, which necessitate quick imaging to assess bone integrity, soft tissue damage, and bleeding. Radiologists play a crucial role in identifying fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue tears, ensuring prompt intervention. Non-traumatic MSK emergencies, on the other hand, involve infectious, vascular, and myonecrosis-related conditions. Infections, such as osteomyelitis or soft tissue abscesses, require imaging to assess bone involvement and soft tissue changes. Vascular emergencies, including compartment syndrome and active bleeding, require imaging to evaluate blood flow and tissue viability. Myonecrosis, resulting from severe muscle damage, necessitates imaging to detect muscle necrosis and determine the extent of tissue involvement, aiding in surgical planning. Understanding these conditions and their radiologic presentation is essential for timely diagnosis and effective management.

Conclusões

Understanding the radiologic characteristics of both traumatic and non-traumatic musculoskeletal emergencies is essential for prompt diagnosis and management. Radiologists play a pivotal role in identifying key abnormalities, guiding treatment decisions, and improving patient outcomes. Timely and accurate imaging is critical in managing these urgent MSK conditions effectively.
