Exploring Female Urethral and Periurethral Conditions: A Pictorial Overview

Introdução e objetivo(s)

The diagnosis of female urethral and periurethral disorders is challenging for clinicians because patients present with nonspecific signs and symptoms.
Advances in imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, voiding urethrocystography, and magnetic resonance imaging, have significantly improved our ability to visualize and evaluate urethral conditions with greater precision. Accurate imaging is crucial for detecting and differentiating between normal anatomical variations and pathological changes.
This exhibit aims to provide a thorough review of these imaging modalities, emphasizing their application in identifying and managing both common and rare urethral pathologies.

Método(s)

This is a case-based review, in the pictorial essay model, exploring the normal anatomy, spectrum of both benign and malignant conditions affecting the female urethra, examining their manifestations through diverse imaging findings.

Discussão

Grasping the anatomical and clinical complexity of the female urethra is crucial for understanding its role in the urinary system and diagnosing various disorders. Advances in imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, voiding urethrocystography, and MRI, have significantly improved our ability to visualize and evaluate urethral conditions with greater precision, crucial for differentiating between normal anatomical variations and pathological changes.
The following topics will be covered:
Normal Anatomy of the Female Urethra in Different Imaging Modalities
Urethral Diverticulum
Paraurethral Cyst
Benign Tumors (Leiomyoma)
Urethral Caruncle
Malignant Tumors (Primary and secondary)
Endometriosis
Marion´s disease
Stress Urinary Incontinence
Post-Surgical Aspects

Conclusões

The female urethra exhibits substantial anatomical complexity, making it challenging to interpret for those unfamiliar with its normal findings and common conditions. Mastery of these concepts not only supports early diagnosis but also significantly reduces the need for more invasive diagnostic procedures, ultimately improving patient outcomes and optimizing clinical management.
