Título
A Handbook for Radiologists: ULTRASOUND EVALUATION OF THE CERVIX DURING PREGNANCY
Introdução e objetivo(s)
Premature birth represents a significant challenge in obstetrics, contributing to substantial neonatal morbidity and mortality. A shortened cervix is a recognized risk factor for preterm labor. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the association between cervical length and premature delivery is critical for improving patient outcomes. Prominent organizations, such as ISUOG, support the implementation of ultrasound screening to detect a shortened cervix in the early stages of pregnancy, allowing for timely interventions to alter the course of the pregnancy.
Método(s)
This review emphasizes the necessity of a comprehensive understanding of cervical anatomy and the standardized approach to ultrasonographic evaluation for identifying cervical abnormalities. Notable ultrasound findings examined include cervical shortening, funneling, amniotic fluid sludge, placenta previa, and vasa previa.
Discussão
Early identification of cervical shortening allows for appropriate intervention strategies, such as the use of progesterone, cervical cerclage, or pessary insertion. It is essential to assess each ultrasound finding individually, distinguishing those that require clinical intervention from those with minimal impact on preterm birth. Additionally, examining the effectiveness of various management approaches is vital for optimizing outcomes for patients with cervical shortening.
Conclusões
Ultrasonographic screening is crucial in identifying a shortened cervix and related abnormalities. By standardizing screening practices and comprehending the significance of various ultrasound findings, it is possible to apply targeted interventions to reduce the incidence of preterm births. Ongoing research is needed to further evaluate the effectiveness of different management techniques and refine clinical guidelines.
