Título
Endometriosis: one more review never hurts
Introdução e objetivo(s)
Endometriosis is a common chronic gynecological condition defined by the presence of functional endometrial glands and stromal-like lesions located outside the uterus. Typically endometriosis presents in young women, with a mean age of diagnosis of 25-29 years and potential risk factors include family history and short menstrual cycles. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a comprehensive review of the normal anatomy of the pelvis. Furthermore, the exhibit will present and discuss common findings in patients with deep endometriosis, based on cases from our imaging department.
Método(s)
Illustrated teaching cases from our imaging department demonstrating the main findings of deep endometriosis.
Discussão
Endometriosis is one of the most common causes of chronic pain in women of reproductive age. For a more accurate diagnosis, understanding the normal pelvic anatomy is essential, focusing on the appearance and mobility of the uterus, the location of the ovaries, and the ultrasound characteristics of the uterosacral and round ligaments. Additionally, the exhibit will cover the appearance of the retrouterine, retrovesical, and paracervical spaces. It will also review the normal anatomical references for the most common locations of endometriotic deposits, as well as the typical pelvic sites affected by endometriosis lesions. Furthermore, the exhibit will present and discuss common findings in patients with deep endometriosis, based on cases from our imaging department.
Conclusões
Endometriosis is a complex condition causing chronic pain and affecting the quality of life for many women of reproductive age. Accurate diagnosis relies on understanding normal pelvic anatomy and recognizing characteristic ultrasound findings. A comprehensive approach to the various forms of endometriosis—superficial, ovarian, and deep—is essential for identifying lesions and determining the appropriate treatment. Advanced imaging techniques like ultrasound and MRI, along with knowledge of anatomical references, help with early diagnosis and effective management, ultimately aiming to alleviate symptoms and enhance the patients' quality of life.
