Título

Enhancing morphology learning using radiology: a symbiotic relationship

Descrição sucinta do(s) objetivo(s)

The objective of this work is to highlight the importance of the early incorporation of radiology in the undergraduate curricula of health careers as an essential tool for learning morphology.

Descrição da(s) doença(s), método(s) e/ou técnica(s)

A review of literature was conducted on the use of radiology in teaching morphology in undergraduate health programs. We selected articles and scientific publications that address the integration of medical imaging into morphology courses and other related subjects.

Discussão

The early incorporation of Radiology in undergraduates’ curricula is not only a valuable resource for learning Morphology but also helps the students to understand the importance of Radiology in the diagnostic work-up and guiding therapy in multiple diseases, introducing the lexicon commonly used in Radiology reports. Instructional strategies to incorporate medical imaging in Morphology courses include lectures, self-instruction modules, incorporating medical images in the dissection room, virtual dissections, real time ultrasound demonstrations, among others. The imaging modalities to be included in the morphology – radiology integration range from basic techniques such as plain films and ultrasound, to hybrid images like PET-CT and SPECT-CT. The Morphology laboratory of the future must include clinical and radiological correlation in situ, where medical imaging will have an irreplaceable site next to the dissection table.

Conclusões

Radiology plays a critical role bridging Morphology with the clinical applications in every anatomic segment, not only highliting the normal radiologic anatomy but also the radiologic findings of the most frequent diseases, relevant to every medical student and general practitioner.
