Aesthetic Procedures of the Nose – Pre and Postoperative Computaded Tomography (CT) Evaluation

Introdução e objetivo(s)

Nose procedures are frequently performed worldwide. Aesthetic nose surgeries have increased over the decades and rhinoplasty is often performed to modify portions to improve the nose appearance without compromising the nasal functionality. The nasal obstruction is an important surgical indication and it is repaired at the same aesthetic procedure. General radiologists and head and neck radiologists are responsible to elaborate a preoperative CT report, describing the anatomy, deformities, reference spots and other features that guides surgeons through the procedure. The postoperative CT report is also an important role played by the radiologists in order to seek complications and imaging features of the procedure. Our study aims to review the functional anatomy of the nose, CT anatomic remarks, nasal deformities and the most common postoperative modifications in usual nose anatomy, also describing the potential aesthetic procedure complications.

Método(s)

This study consists in a pictorial essay based in a serial of selected anonymized CT cases from our database imaging system that were collected and analyzed, in order to review the nose functional anatomy, nasal deformities and its importance to the surgeons, during the planning of the procedure. Were selected postoperative CT cases in order to emphasize the modifications in usual anatomy and complications.

Discussão

The minacious knowledge of the functional nose anatomy is crucial for planning a surgical aesthetic procedure, it is important to maintain the functionality. An important CT preoperative description is the internal nasal angle and the internal valve area, these imaging features helps the surgeon on planning which technique is better and to try to avoid some complications. Postoperative complications includes infection, hemorrhagic, traumatic, functional and aesthetic disorders. Some of these complications such as septal deformities, septal perforation, cellulitis, septal hematoma, tip deformities have particular imaging features.

Conclusões

Radiologists must be aware of the nose anatomy, its variants and deformities in order to describe them on the report, mainly to help the surgeons in planning nose aesthetic procedures and describe its complications on postoperative CT reports.
